How to use this calculator
- Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
- Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
- Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.
Private by default
Inputs and results stay in this browser tab. Bookify does not upload or store the values you enter.
Formula and method
Example in initial displayed units: Post height 3 gives Post depth ".99", Post length "3.99".
depth = above-ground height×ratio; total post = height+depth
Worked example
Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.
- Post height
- 3 m
- Post length
- 4 m
- Post depth
- 0.99 m
Assumptions and limitations
- The ratio relates buried depth to above-ground height. The retained default is exactly 0.33, not an exact one-third ratio. This is a chosen-ratio planning model; soil, wind loads, frost depth and local requirements do not enter the equation.
- Use compatible units and enough independent measurements. Clear unknown values before solving backward. Display precision does not quantify uncertainty in site measurements.
Common questions
Is the default ratio a universal installation requirement?
No. The default is a planning assumption. Use an appropriate site-specific embedment ratio or known depth; the equation does not evaluate ground or structural conditions.
