Formula and method
Example in initial displayed units: Length (L) 10, Width (W) 5 gives Area (A) ".005", Fence perimeter (P) 30.
P = 2(L+W); fence without gate material = P−opening; A = LW
Worked example
Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.
- Length (L)
- 10 m
- Width (W)
- 5 m
- Area (A)
- 0.005 ha
- Fence perimeter (P)
- 30 m
Assumptions and limitations
- The enclosure is rectangular and length is at least width. Gate mode subtracts one opening from the full boundary; that opening cannot exceed the long side. Material allowances, posts, corners and overlapping panels are separate from this geometric length. Initial area units are hectares.
- Use compatible units and enough independent measurements. Clear unknown values before solving backward. Display precision does not quantify uncertainty in site measurements.
Common questions
Should I subtract the gate from the enclosure perimeter?
The geometric perimeter remains the full boundary. Subtract the opening only from the fencing material length; the gate still occupies part of that boundary.
