How to use this calculator
- Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
- Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
- Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.
Use the result with context
Results are estimates for planning and education. Confirm rates, taxes, fees, and legal requirements with the relevant institution or a qualified professional before making a financial decision.
Formula and method
Financing 1200 for one month at 12% nominal annual interest gives a 1212 payment and 12 of interest.
Principal = price − down payment − trade-in; payment = principal × monthly rate / (1 − (1 + monthly rate)^−months).

Assumptions and limitations
- Assumes fixed nominal annual interest with monthly installments and no fees, sales tax, insurance, balloon payment or irregular first period.
- Use a positive interest rate and positive whole number of monthly payments. The captured payment formula does not support the zero-interest limit.
- Loan duration is locked by default. Enter months using the displayed term unit.
- Amounts use a single consistent currency. Currency selector conversion factors are a captured static snapshot; they are not current FX quotes.
- Clear the unknown field before solving an inverse. Locks keep known values fixed; contradictory locked values require correction.
- Domain review limits calculations to the documented finite scenario; original captured equations, inverses and unit options are retained.
Common questions
How should I interpret the example?
Financing 1200 for one month at 12% nominal annual interest gives a 1212 payment and 12 of interest.
References
Require the documented finite model domain. Use positive interest; the zero-interest limit is outside this model. Financed principal must be positive. Use a positive whole number of monthly payments. Integer membership is checked with isInteger, so ordinary, tiny and large fractional counts are rejected even when tolerant floor equality would pass.
