Formula and method
In the displayed 2023/24 ordinary-asset scenario, income of 20,000 and gains of 16,000 give historical gains tax of 1,000 and retained gain of 15,000.
Taxable gains = max(0,gain−historical allowance). Individuals split taxable gains across remaining basic-rate capacity; trustees use the higher historical asset rate.

Assumptions and limitations
- This historical model supports only 2022/23 and 2023/24; its rates and allowances are not current tax guidance. It assumes the standard personal allowance and omits losses, reliefs, special trust rules and residence effects.
- A trustee uses 20% for ordinary gains and 28% for residential property in these historical years. This corrects the source treatment of trustees as individuals with a remaining basic-rate band.
- Clear an editable unknown before solving an inverse. Selection controls and forced outputs cannot be inferred.

References
The calculation follows this reviewed mathematical model: Taxable gains = max(0,gain−historical allowance). Individuals split taxable gains across remaining basic-rate capacity; trustees use the higher historical asset rate. Required model inputs: Annual income must be nonnegative.
