How to use this calculator
- Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
- Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
- Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.
Use the result with context
Results are estimates for planning and education. Confirm rates, taxes, fees, and legal requirements with the relevant institution or a qualified professional before making a financial decision.
Formula and method
A vehicle priced at 1,000, trade-in of 100, down payment of 100 and 10% tax leave 890 to finance under the stated trade-in credit assumption.
Loan = (vehicle price−trade-in value)×(1+tax rate)−down payment; monthly payment = L(r/12)/(1−(1+r/12)^(-months)).

Assumptions and limitations
- The entered tax applies to price less trade-in value, an explicit tax-credit scenario. Jurisdiction rules differ; use an adjusted price or zero tax when that treatment does not apply.
- Assume a fixed fully amortizing monthly loan with positive interest, whole payment months, and no dealer fees, negative trade equity or balloon payment.
- Use one currency throughout. Retained currency selector factors are a historical snapshot, not live exchange rates.
- Clear an editable unknown before solving an inverse. Selection controls and forced outputs cannot be inferred.
Common questions
What does this model assume?
The entered tax applies to price less trade-in value, an explicit tax-credit scenario. Jurisdiction rules differ; use an adjusted price or zero tax when that treatment does not apply.
Can I use the currency menu as a current quote?
No. Keep amounts in one currency; conversion factors are a captured historical snapshot.
References
The calculation follows this reviewed mathematical model: Loan = (vehicle price−trade-in value)×(1+tax rate)−down payment; monthly payment = L(r/12)/(1−(1+r/12)^(-months)). Required model inputs: Financed principal must be positive. Use positive interest; the zero-rate limit is outside this branch. Use a positive whole number of payment months.
