Formula and method

At a custom straight-line rate of 10% of replacement cost per year, a 1,000 appliance loses 300 over three years, leaving a modeled value of 700.

Remaining value = replacement cost × (1 − annual depreciation fraction × age in years)

Worked example

Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Depreciation applies to the original replacement-cost amount each year, rather than compounding on the remaining balance.
  • This captured model accepts positive ages, rates strictly between 0% and 100%, and positive remaining values. It does not automatically floor an exhausted asset at zero.

Common questions

Is this an appraisal or an insurance payout?

No. The result follows a straight-line assumption, not a resale appraisal, tax schedule or insurance policy. Condition, maintenance, brand, demand, salvage value and contract terms can change actual value. Use the custom rate when the preset does not fit your purpose.
