How to use this calculator
- Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
- Edit a calculated value to solve backwards, or lock a value to hold it fixed.
- Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Formula and method
Divide annual energy consumption by floor area. A building using 12,000 kWh over a year with 100 square meters of floor area has an energy use intensity of 120 kWh per square meter per year.
Annual energy use intensity = annual energy consumption ÷ floor area
Worked example
Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.
- Total annual energy consumption
- 12000 kWh
- Total floor area
- 100 m²
- Energy use intensity (EUI)
- 120 kWh/m² / yrs
Assumptions and limitations
- Use consistent area definitions, annual periods and energy boundaries. Building use, climate, occupancy and whether energy is measured at the site or source affect meaningful comparisons.
- Use the units shown beside each field. This model assumes the stated relationship and does not account for quantities left out of the formula.
Common questions
Can I compare any two buildings?
Use consistent area definitions, annual periods and energy boundaries. Building use, climate, occupancy and whether energy is measured at the site or source affect meaningful comparisons.
