How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
  2. Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
  3. Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Formula and method

2 kg at the conventional TNT reference of 4.184 MJ/kg has a 2 kg TNT energy equivalent.

Equivalent mass = source mass × source specific energy / TNT specific energy.

Worked example

Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.

Weight of explosive (W==exp==)
2 kg
Heat of detonation of explosive (H==exp==)
4184000 J/kg
TNT factor
1
TNT equivalent weight (W==eq==)
2 kg of TNT

Assumptions and limitations

  • This is an energy accounting comparison. It does not predict blast pressure, damage, geometry or detonation performance.
  • The retained TNT reference is 4.184 MJ/kg; preset material energy values are approximate.
  • Enter known quantities and clear the unknown to use available inverse branches. Locks retain supplied values. Consistency messages cover fully visible equations; identities with hidden dependencies may require a manual consistency check. Preset values are illustrative approximations, and unit selectors preserve the underlying quantity.

Common questions

How do I solve for a different quantity?

Clear that quantity and supply enough independent known values. Some outputs are one-way or tied to a selected preset, so they cannot determine every input.
