Formula and method

A 700-word script at 140 words per minute takes five minutes of continuous speech. Add planned pauses, questions and demonstrations separately.

Minutes = words ÷ words per minute; measured rate = words ÷ measured minutes

Worked example

Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.

Word count
700 words
Speaking duration
5 min

Assumptions and limitations

  • The five preset rates are planning assumptions, not measurements or guarantees of comprehension.
  • Word count is a nonnegative whole number. Custom pace is positive. Measuring a rate requires positive word count and duration.
  • The estimate assumes constant pace without extra pauses. Include presentation activities and question time separately.

Common questions

How do I use my own pace?

Choose the custom rate and enter words per minute, or choose measured mode and provide the words and time from a timed passage.

Do the presets include pauses?

They apply a constant rate to the full word count. Add any separately planned pauses or activities yourself.

References

Bookify requires whole word counts and positive pace, with positive words and duration for rate measurement.
