Formula and method
Divide stack thickness by sheet count. A 5-centimeter stack containing 500 sheets has an average sheet thickness of 0.1 millimeters. Caliper is also shown in thousandths of an inch.
Sheet thickness = stack thickness ÷ sheet count; caliper = thickness in inches × 1,000
Worked example
Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.
- Stack thickness
- 5 cm
- Paper sheets in the stack
- 500 sheets
- Paper thickness
- 0.1 mm
- Caliper
- 3.937 pt
Assumptions and limitations
- No. Thickness and mass per area are different properties. Stack compression, coatings and material density can affect the relationship, so this measurement does not directly produce a GSM value.
- Use the units shown beside each field. This model assumes the stated relationship and does not account for quantities left out of the formula.
Common questions
Does thickness determine paper weight?
No. Thickness and mass per area are different properties. Stack compression, coatings and material density can affect the relationship, so this measurement does not directly produce a GSM value.
