How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
  2. Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
  3. Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Formula and method

An amount of 10 nmol at a target concentration of 100 μM requires a final solution volume of 100 μL.

Final solution volume = solute amount / target amount concentration

Worked example

Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.

Amount of solute
10 nmol
Target amount concentration
100 μM
Required final solution volume
100 µl

Assumptions and limitations

  • Amount, concentration and final volume are positive. Specify the same chemical entity for amount and concentration.
  • The result is final solution volume, not universally the amount of solvent to add. For a dry sample with negligible volume, solvent added may approximate final volume; existing liquid volume must be considered.
  • The calculation assumes the stated amount dissolves and remains present. It does not infer purity, solubility, stability or a suitable solvent.

Common questions

Can I enter a mass in the amount field?

No. Convert mass to amount using an appropriate molar mass first, or use the mass-and-molarity calculator.

Why can I not simply add this volume to an existing solution?

The result is the required total solution volume. Existing solution already contributes to that total and may contain additional solute.
