How to use this calculator
- Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
- Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
- Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.
Private by default
Inputs and results stay in this browser tab. Bookify does not upload or store the values you enter.
Formula and method
Moving from 125 to 92 is a change of −33. The sign records the direction; this is a difference in original units rather than a percentage change or an absolute-value operation.
Change = final value − initial value
Worked example
Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.
- Starting value
- 125
- Ending value
- 92
- Signed change
- -33
Assumptions and limitations
- Enter both measurements in the same units and on the same scale. This tool does not convert units.
- Positive means an increase, negative means a decrease, and zero means no change. A zero starting value is valid.
- Knowing any two of starting value, ending value and signed change determines the third. This arithmetic does not explain the cause of a change.
Common questions
Why is the change negative?
The ending value is lower than the starting value. For example, 92 − 125 = −33.
How does this differ from percentage change?
Percentage change divides the signed change by a starting value and multiplies by 100. This calculator keeps the result in the original units and does not divide by the starting value.
