Formula and method
12.346 rounds to 12.35 at the nearest hundredth. 7.824 rounds to 7.82. Exact halfway values round away from zero.
Displayed result = number rounded to two decimal places
Worked example
Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.
- Number to round
- 12.346
- Rounded to the nearest hundredth
- 12.35
Assumptions and limitations
- The result is rounded for display to two decimal places. Trailing zeroes may be omitted, so 2 and 2.00 represent the same rounded value.
- Exact halfway cases use half-up rounding, away from zero: 1.235 becomes 1.24 and −1.235 becomes −1.24.
- The captured model retains the unrounded decimal internally. This standalone display does not change an accounting policy or round another calculator’s intermediate values.
Common questions
Is the nearest hundredth the same as two significant figures?
No. A hundredth is the 0.01 place. Two significant figures depend on the size of the number.
