Formula and method
At a custom ratio of 2 cups of water per cup of dry rice, 3 cups of rice require 6 US customary cups of water, or 1,419.529419 mL.
Water volume = dry-rice volume × water-to-rice volume ratio

Assumptions and limitations
- The ratio is by volume, not by mass. The cup basis is the US customary cup, exactly 236.5882365 mL.
- Rice-type presets and listed times are starting estimates from the captured model. Variety, brand, rinsing, soaking, equipment, lid fit and evaporation can change the needed water and time.
- Use the package or appliance instructions to choose a suitable ratio. Custom mode lets you enter that ratio directly and does not supply a cooking time.
- Amounts and ratios are positive. This is a proportional volume calculation, not a guarantee of texture or a cooking-completion test.
Common questions
Can I use a rice-cooker cup instead?
The volume ratio works with any consistently used cup, but the mL output here assumes US customary cups. Many rice-cooker cups are smaller.
Why might the preset differ from my package?
Cooking method, variety and preparation change water needs. Select custom ratio to use the instructions for your rice and equipment.

The US fluid ounce uses one 128th of the exact US liquid gallon, replacing the rounded captured reciprocal factor. The US customary cup uses one sixteenth of the exact US liquid gallon, replacing the rounded captured cup volume. Bookify replaces the captured rounded US gallon with the exact 3.785411784-liter definition.
