Formula and method

Progress of 375 toward a goal of 500 is 75%. Progress of 600 against the same goal is 120%, meaning the target has been exceeded.

Progress percentage = progress ÷ goal × 100

Worked example

Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Progress must be nonnegative and the goal must be greater than zero. A zero target cannot be used as a denominator.
  • Progress and target must use the same unit. The calculator does not convert currencies, distances or other measurements.
  • The result is not capped at 100%. It describes the achieved amount relative to the target, not necessarily the percentage of a bounded task completed.
  • At zero progress and zero percent, the target cannot be uniquely recovered by inverse calculation.

Common questions

Why can the result exceed 100%?

The achieved amount is larger than the target. For example, 600 ÷ 500 × 100 = 120%.

How do I find the progress needed for a percentage?

Enter the target and desired percentage, leaving progress empty. The required amount is target × percentage ÷ 100.
