Assumptions and limitations
- Arithmetic uses 64 significant decimal digits. Displayed values are rounded separately.
- Each field represents the same quantity in its selected units; enter one known value to calculate its equivalents.
- Conversion preserves the supplied pressure basis. Converting units does not add or remove atmospheric pressure when switching between gauge and absolute pressure.
- The standard atmosphere is a defined constant. Actual local atmospheric pressure varies. Signed values may represent gauge pressure or pressure differences.
Common questions
Does converting gauge PSI to pascals make it absolute pressure?
The unit changes while the same gauge reference remains. Absolute pressure requires separately accounting for the reference atmospheric pressure.
References
Mercury pressure columns use conventional density and standard gravity, with the exact international inch. Pounds-force per square inch use the exact international pound and inch with standard gravity, replacing the rounded captured factor. One technical atmosphere is exactly one kilogram-force per square centimeter under standard gravity.
