Formula and method

A torque of 1.3558179483314004 N·m equals exactly 12 lbf·in or 1 lbf·ft under standard gravity.

1 lbf·in = 0.1129848290276167 N·m; 1 lbf·ft = 1.3558179483314004 N·m

Worked example

Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Pound-force uses the international pound and standard gravity of 9.80665 m/s². Pound-force inch and pound-force foot are distinct by a factor of 12.
  • The tonne-force, US short-ton-force and imperial long-ton-force options use different mass definitions. Choose the intended convention.
  • Signed values can represent torque along an agreed axis. This unit converter does not calculate fastener preload or an allowable tightening torque.
  • N·m describes torque here. Energy is also dimensionally N·m, but equal unit dimensions do not make torque and energy the same physical quantity.

Common questions

Are inch-pounds and foot-pounds interchangeable?

No. One pound-force foot is twelve pound-force inches.

Does this provide a safe bolt torque?

No. It converts a supplied torque. Fastener, thread, friction, material and load requirements need a separate model.

References

Pound-force inches use the exact international pound and inch with standard gravity. Pound-force feet use the exact international pound and foot with standard gravity. Kilogram-force centimeters use standard gravity and exactly one centimeter. Kilogram-force meters use standard gravity exactly, replacing a rounded reciprocal. Metric tonne-force meters use exactly 1000 kilograms and standard gravity. US short-ton-force meters use exactly 2000 international pounds and standard gravity. Imperial long-ton-force meters use exactly 2240 international pounds and standard gravity. Poundal feet use exactly one international pound times the square of the international foot per second squared.
