Formula and method
One pound-force foot equals exactly 1.3558179483314004 N·m using standard gravity and the international foot and pound.
Torque in N·m = torque in lbf·ft × 1.3558179483314004
Worked example
Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.
- Torque — second unit
- 1 lbf·ft
- Torque — first unit
- 1.3558 N·m
Assumptions and limitations
- Force-based units use standard gravity, exactly 9.80665 m/s², and the international foot and pound. US and UK ton-force options mean short and long tons respectively.
- Signed and zero torque values are allowed. Direction conventions must be consistent across the input and output.
- Although torque and energy share dimensions, torque in N·m is not interpreted as work in joules here.
Common questions
Is a pound-foot the same as an inch-pound?
No. One pound-force foot equals twelve pound-force inches; check the unit on the torque specification.
References
Pound-force feet use the exact international pound and foot with standard gravity. Kilogram-force meters use standard gravity exactly, replacing a rounded reciprocal. Metric tonne-force meters use exactly 1000 kilograms and standard gravity. US short-ton-force meters use exactly 2000 international pounds and standard gravity. Imperial long-ton-force meters use exactly 2240 international pounds and standard gravity. Poundal feet use exactly one international pound times the square of the international foot per second squared.
