How to use this calculator
- Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
- Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
- Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Inputs and results stay in this browser tab. Bookify does not upload or store the values you enter.
Formula and method
One pound-force equals exactly 4.4482216152605 N. Ten pounds-force therefore equals 44.482216152605 N.
Newtons = pounds-force × 4.4482216152605
Worked example
Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.
- Force magnitude in pounds-force
- 10 lbf
- Force magnitude in newtons
- 44.48 N
Assumptions and limitations
- This converts force, not mass. An unqualified weight label of lb can mean mass; establish which quantity the measurement describes before converting.
- One pound-force uses one international pound of mass (0.45359237 kg) accelerated at standard gravity (9.80665 m/s²).
- The retained input domain is a nonnegative force magnitude. Zero is allowed; direction is outside this two-field tool.
- This definition does not measure gravitational acceleration at a particular location or determine the actual weight of a mass there.
Common questions
Can I convert in the opposite direction?
Yes. Enter the known value in any editable field. The other representations update in their selected units; changing a unit preserves the physical quantity.
Can I convert a mass in pounds directly to newtons?
Mass and force are different quantities. To calculate gravitational force from mass, you also need the applicable acceleration; standard gravity is one convention, not every location’s measured value.
