Formula and method
With 50% moisture, 20% protein, 10% fat and 5% fiber become 40%, 20% and 10% on a dry matter basis. The residual is 30%.
Dry-basis nutrient % = as-fed nutrient % ×100/(100−moisture%); residual =100−moisture−protein−fat−fiber.

Assumptions and limitations
- This is an arithmetic comparison of supplied nutrient percentages, not a nutritional adequacy assessment. Guaranteed label minimums and maximums may not represent one measured composition.
- Moisture must be at least zero and below 100%; all supplied components must be nonnegative and cannot together exceed 100%. The residual includes all unlisted constituents and is not automatically carbohydrate.
- Both comparison products include the residual in the dry-basis total. Clearing an unknown supports the captured scalar inverses; zero numerator and denominator pairs do not uniquely determine moisture.
Common questions
What does the result describe?
This is an arithmetic comparison of supplied nutrient percentages, not a nutritional adequacy assessment. Guaranteed label minimums and maximums may not represent one measured composition.
References
Include the residual dry-matter component in the second product total and every corresponding inverse, matching the first product and mass-fraction conservation. Enforce the documented finite physical, count and denominator domains.
