How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
  2. Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
  3. Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Formula and method

A force of 10 N is 10 J/m. Separately, 25 J of work is 25 N·m. Force cannot be converted to an energy value without a displacement.

1 N = 1 J/m; 1 J = 1 N·m of work

Worked example

Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.

Force in newtons
10 N
Work in joules
25 J
Equivalent energy per distance
10 J / m J/m
Equivalent work in newton-meters
25 N·m

Assumptions and limitations

  • The two pairs are independent: force converts to energy per distance, while energy converts to force multiplied by distance.
  • This is not a conversion from force alone to energy. For work by a constant force, displacement and the angle between force and displacement are also needed.
  • The N·m field in the work pair describes energy. A torque measured in N·m is a different physical quantity, despite sharing dimensions.
  • Signed values can represent a force component or signed work under a stated direction convention.

Common questions

How many joules are 10 newtons?

There is no unique answer without displacement and direction. A constant 10 N force acting through 3 m in its direction does 30 J of work.

Why do the two pairs not update one another?

They represent different physical quantities. Equating their numeric values would falsely convert force directly into energy.
