How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
  2. Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
  3. Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Formula and method

Under the fixed 1,039 Btu/ft³ assumption, 1,000 ft³ corresponds to 1.039 million Btu or 10.39 therms. Actual gas supplies may use a different heat-content factor.

Energy in Btu = volume in ft³ × 1,039; one therm = 100,000 Btu; one modeled BOE = 5,800,000 Btu

Worked example

Assumptions and limitations

  • The volume-to-energy relation preserves a fixed 1,039 Btu per cubic foot assumption. It is not a live national average, utility billing factor or universal property of natural gas.
  • Actual heat content depends on gas composition and the reference conditions used for the volume measurement. This tool does not correct temperature, pressure or compressibility.
  • Cubic-meter and cubic-foot units use the exact international foot. Mcf means one thousand cubic feet and MMcf means one million cubic feet.
  • Energy units consistently use Btu (International Table), 1,055.05585262 joules per Btu, and a 100,000-Btu therm convention. A therm defined through a different Btu convention is a distinct unit.
  • The BOE option uses a stated accounting convention of 5.8 million Btu per barrel equivalent. It is an energy comparison, not a physical volume of gas or a guarantee of crude-oil heat content.
  • Zero is supported and negative physical quantities are rejected. For a billing or engineering calculation requiring another heating value, use the specified heating value directly in a suitable model.

Common questions

Can I use this as my utility bill conversion factor?

Only if the 1,039 Btu/ft³ assumption and reference-volume conditions match the bill. Utilities can supply a different factor for their gas and billing period.

Bookify makes the captured fixed-heat-content model internally consistent using exact cubic-foot conversion, 100,000 Btu per therm, Btu (IT) joules and 5.8 million Btu per barrel equivalent, and rejects negative amounts.
