How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
  2. Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
  3. Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Formula and method

1,000 kg/m³ equals 1 kg/dm³. Customary density uses the selected pound and volume definitions.

Density conversion = mass-unit conversion / volume-unit conversion

Worked example

Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.

Density in kilograms per cubic meters
1000 kg/m³
Density in kilograms per cubic decimeters
1 kg/dm³
Density in pounds per cubic feet
62.428 lb/cu ft
Density in pounds per cubic yards
1685.555 lb/cu yd
Density in pounds per US gallons
8.3454 lb/US gal

Assumptions and limitations

  • Arithmetic uses 64 significant decimal digits. Displayed values are rounded separately.
  • Each field represents the same quantity in its selected units; enter one known value to calculate its equivalents.
  • Density is mass divided by volume. Ordinary physical mass densities are positive; signed numerical differences are also converted.
  • Pounds are international avoirdupois pounds and the gallon selector identifies US liquid gallons. This conversion does not change a material’s temperature-dependent density.

Common questions

Why does a pound per gallon need a gallon definition?

US and Imperial gallons have different volumes. A mass-per-volume value must use the specified gallon.
