How to use this calculator
- Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
- Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
- Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Inputs and results stay in this browser tab. Bookify does not upload or store the values you enter.
Formula and method
Example in initial displayed units: Positive position n 8 gives Triangular count Tₙ 36.
Tₙ = n(n+1)/2
Worked example
Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.
- Positive position n
- 8
- Result
- Position 8 gives a triangular count of 36. Each successive row adds one more dot.
Assumptions and limitations
- The positive whole position n starts at one and is capped at the captured maximum 44,721,359,549. The count is a sum of the first n positive integers and is displayed in the result explanation. The captured count helper remains hidden; there is no public count-to-position input. Zero and fractional positions are excluded.
- Clear unknown measurements before solving backward. Use compatible units and independent values. Reference pictures are original schematic drawings. Independently rounded measurements can fail strict compatibility at a boundary.
Common questions
Can I enter a dot count to find its position here?
This workflow exposes the position input and returns the dot count in an explanation. It keeps the captured internal count helper hidden, so a count-to-position control is not offered.
How do I use this calculator with different units?
Enter coordinates or counts directly. Cartesian coordinates must use the same scale; counts and sequence positions are dimensionless.
