Formula and method
Four portions of 210 g require 840 g total. Under the retained 80/20 recipe model, that is 672 g potatoes and 168 g added liquid.
Total mass = portion mass × serving equivalents; model volume = mass / 210 g per cup; potatoes = 80% and liquid = 20% of total mass

Assumptions and limitations
- The retained estimate is 210 g of prepared mash per cup. Packing, potato type and recipe can change actual density.
- Cup and tablespoon outputs use US recipe measures, with 16 tablespoons per cup. The density estimate remains approximate even though their unit ratio is exact.
- The recipe allocates 80% of the modeled mass to potatoes and 20% to added liquid by mass. It does not account for peel loss, cooking-water changes, evaporation or separate butter and seasoning additions.
- Serving equivalents may be fractional for scaling. All portions and quantities must be positive. Liquid output is a mass; it is not automatically the same numerical volume for every ingredient.
Common questions
Is the potato output an exact shopping weight?
No. It is the potato share of the recipe model. Add your own allowance for peels, trimming, preparation losses and leftovers.
