How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
  2. Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
  3. Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Formula and method

Two faucets dripping 60 times per minute for one average month produce 5,259,600 drops. At 0.25 mL per drop, the estimated loss is 1,314.9 L.

Drops = rate Γ— duration Γ— faucets; volume = drops Γ— 0.25 mL; bath equivalents = volume / 151.41647136 L

Assumptions and limitations

  • Every faucet is assumed to leak at the same constant rate. For different rates, calculate each faucet separately or use their average rate.
  • Each drop is modeled as 0.25 mL. Actual drop size varies; measure collected water over time when you need a measured loss rather than this estimate.
  • A month is the retained average duration of 30.4375 days, and a year is 365.25 days. Choose days or hours for a specific observation interval.
  • One comparison bath is exactly 40 US liquid gallons. This is a fixed comparison volume, not a claim about typical bath usage. Positive inputs are required; a reverse-solved faucet count can be a fractional equivalent.

Common questions

Why can changing the time unit change the number shown?

The number is converted to preserve the same duration. A month uses a fixed average duration, so enter an exact number of days when calendar-month length matters.

Bookify uses the exact 40 US gallon comparison volume of 151416.47136 mL in both retained bath-volume directions. The US fluid ounce uses one 128th of the exact US liquid gallon, replacing the rounded captured reciprocal factor. The US customary cup uses one sixteenth of the exact US liquid gallon, replacing the rounded captured cup volume. Bookify replaces the captured rounded US gallon with the exact 3.785411784-liter definition.
