How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
  2. Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
  3. Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Formula and method

A population of 1,000, output of 20,000 currency units per person per year, energy intensity of 2 energy units per currency unit and carbon intensity of 0.1 kg CO₂ per energy unit imply 4,000,000 kg CO₂ per year.

CO₂ = population × GDP per person × energy per GDP × CO₂ per energy

Worked example

Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.

Population
1000
GDP per person per period (currency/person)
20000
Energy intensity (energy/currency)
2
Carbon intensity (CO₂ mass/energy)
.1
Energy-related CO₂ mass per period
4000000

Assumptions and limitations

  • Use one matching currency basis, energy unit, CO₂ mass unit and reporting period across all four factors. There are no automatic unit or currency conversions in this identity.
  • The retained starting numbers are illustrative, not current population, GDP or emissions statistics. Replace every factor with data for the same geography and period.
  • This positive-factor model retains the source domain of values greater than zero. It describes the energy-related CO₂ covered by your inputs, not automatically all greenhouse gases or a complete life-cycle footprint.
  • The product is an accounting identity. Changing one factor while holding the others fixed is a scenario calculation, not a causal forecast.

Common questions

What unit does the result use?

The currency and energy units cancel when the inputs are consistent. The result uses the CO₂ mass unit from carbon intensity and the period from GDP per person.
