How do I spread stitch increases or decreases evenly across a row?

Enter your current and target stitch counts. The planner divides the original stitches into groups whose sizes differ by at most one. For an increase, work the plain stitches and knit front and back in the next stitch. For a decrease, work the plain stitches and knit the next two together. Each group includes the stitches consumed by the change.
