Formula and method
Uploading 100 MB at a sustained 10 Mb/s takes 80 seconds before additional setup time or overhead.
Upload duration = file size in bits / effective bits per second
Worked example
Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.
- File size
- 100 MB
- Sustained effective upload rate
- 10 Mbit /s
- Estimated transfer duration
- 0:1:20 hrs / min / sec
Assumptions and limitations
- The upload rate stays constant and represents useful file data delivered per second. Protocol overhead, congestion, retries and pauses are excluded.
- The offered file-size units use decimal prefixes: 1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes. Bitrate units are bits per second, with eight bits per byte.
- All three quantities must be positive. Long duration conversions use the captured fixed month and year factors rather than calendar dates.
Common questions
Why is 100 MB at 10 Mb/s longer than ten seconds?
The file size is in bytes and the rate is in bits. Convert 100 MB to 800 megabits, then divide by 10 megabits per second.
