How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
  2. Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
  3. Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Formula and method

Transferring 1 GB at a sustained payload rate of 100 Mb/s takes 80 seconds: 8,000 Mb divided by 100 Mb/s.

Payload rate = data size / elapsed time

Worked example

Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.

Transferred payload size
1 GB
Sustained payload rate
100 Mbit /s
Ideal elapsed transfer time
0:1:20 hrs / min / sec

Assumptions and limitations

  • Treat the rate as sustained useful-payload throughput. Link capacity or an advertised access speed may be higher than the rate achieved by a transfer.
  • Connection setup, protocol overhead, retransmissions, changing throughput, shared traffic and storage bottlenecks are excluded.
  • All three values must be positive in this captured model. Decimal GB means 1,000,000,000 bytes; GiB means 1,073,741,824 bytes.

Common questions

Is Mbps the same as MB/s?

No. A megabyte contains eight megabits. A 100 Mb/s payload rate is 12.5 MB/s using decimal prefixes.

Can this estimate upload as well as download time?

Yes. Use the sustained payload rate for the relevant direction. It does not measure your connection or contact a server.
