Formula and method

Three earned runs over six innings and two outs give a nine-inning ERA of 4.05.

ERA = earned runs × game innings / (whole innings + extra outs / 3)

Worked example

Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Enter whole innings and remaining outs separately. A scorebook entry of 6.2 means six innings and two outs, not 6.2 decimal innings.
  • Recorded earned runs and complete innings are nonnegative whole numbers; remaining outs range from zero to two. At least one out must have been recorded.
  • Game length is a positive whole number. Nine is the default; select the normalization appropriate to your competition.
  • Zero earned runs yield ERA zero. Zero ERA cannot uniquely determine an unknown innings total when runs are also zero.

Common questions

Can I enter less than one inning?

Yes. Enter zero complete innings and one or two additional outs.

References

Bookify separates whole innings from zero, one or two extra outs and accepts a positive partial inning with zero complete innings.
