Formula and method
A box 2 ft 6 in long, 3 ft wide and 4 ft high has volume 30 ft³, exactly 0.84950539776 m³.
V = length × width × height; 1 ft³ = 0.3048³ m³ = 0.028316846592 m³
Worked example
Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.

Assumptions and limitations
- The shape is a rectangular prism with three perpendicular edges. For container capacity, measure the inside dimensions; wall thickness, rounded corners and obstructions require separate adjustments.
- The initial dimension controls use feet and inches. Enter a pair such as 2:6 for 2 ft 6 in, or select a single length unit. Metric meter-and-centimeter pairs are also available.
- The international foot is exactly 0.3048 meters. Its cube is exactly 0.028316846592 cubic meters; volume conversions cube the length factor.
- Dimensions and volume must be positive in this retained workflow. To solve backward, enter volume and two known dimensions, leaving the remaining dimension empty. Volume alone cannot determine all three dimensions.
- US and Imperial liquid volume units have different definitions. The tablespoon and teaspoon choices here are 15 mL and 5 mL, rather than US customary spoon volumes. Display rounding is separate from arithmetic precision.
Common questions
How do I enter feet and inches?
Use feet:inches, for example 2:6 means 2 feet 6 inches. Select feet or inches alone if you prefer one numeric quantity.
Can I find height from volume?
Yes. Enter the volume and the known length and width, leaving height empty. The height is volume divided by length times width, with compatible units.
How many liters are in one cubic foot?
Exactly 28.316846592 liters, using the international foot.

The US fluid ounce uses one 128th of the exact US liquid gallon, replacing the rounded captured reciprocal factor. The US customary cup uses one sixteenth of the exact US liquid gallon, replacing the rounded captured cup volume. Bookify replaces the captured rounded US gallon with the exact 3.785411784-liter definition.
