How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.

Use the result with context

Results are estimates for planning and education. Confirm rates, taxes, fees, and legal requirements with the relevant institution or a qualified professional before making a financial decision.

Formula and method

A total return of 21% over two years is equivalent to 10% compounded annually.

Annualized return = (1 + total return)^(1/years) βˆ’ 1 = (ending/beginning value)^(1/years) βˆ’ 1

Worked example

Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.

Assumptions and limitations

  • This constant-rate summary links a starting value to an ending value. It does not describe actual returns in each year.
  • The value-based mode assumes no intervening deposits or withdrawals. Include reinvested distributions consistently in total return; this is not a money-weighted IRR calculation.
  • Holding period must be positive and starting value greater than zero. A zero ending value or βˆ’100% total return is a complete loss and is supported. Returns below βˆ’100% are outside this nonnegative-value model.
  • Monthly and quarterly rates are equivalent compound rates, not the annual rate divided by 12 or four. A zero return does not determine a unique holding period.
  • Currency choices use the captured October 7, 2026 rate snapshot, not live exchange rates. Use comparable currencies and consistent treatment of fees and taxes.

Common questions

Can I annualize a period shorter than a year?

Yes, by entering a positive fractional number of years. The result extrapolates the same compound growth rate and is not a forecast.
