How to use this calculator
- Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
- Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
- Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Formula and method
Acceleration = 5.0000000. The worked example lists its inputs and unit conventions.
a = (v−u)/t; a = F/m; s = ut + at²/2. The selected travel-time root is t = 2s/[u+√(u²+2as)].

Assumptions and limitations
- The velocity-difference and force modes allow signed acceleration. The distance mode supports forward distance and nonnegative starting speed, with the earlier positive-time root before reversal. Negative acceleration is allowed when the discriminant remains nonnegative. The rationalized time inverse supports a=0 when starting speed is positive.
- Clear an unknown quantity and lock known quantities to solve a supported inverse. Supply compatible values for the selected model.
Common questions
What branch does this use?
The velocity-difference and force modes allow signed acceleration. The distance mode supports forward distance and nonnegative starting speed, with the earlier positive-time root before reversal. Negative acceleration is allowed when the discriminant remains nonnegative. The rationalized time inverse supports a=0 when starting speed is positive.
Can I solve an inverse?
Yes. Editable numeric fields retain the captured inverses, subject to the selected physical branch and known quantities.
References
Rationalize the selected positive-time root to remove cancellation and its removable a=0 singularity. For forward distance, nonnegative initial speed and real discriminant, t=2s/(u+sqrt(u²+2as)) is algebraically equivalent to the earlier root and extends continuously to s/u at a=0,u>0. Mass must be positive. The forward-distance branch requires nonnegative initial speed. The selected travel branch requires positive forward distance. The time-root discriminant must be nonnegative. Forward travel requires positive initial speed or positive acceleration.
