How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
  2. Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
  3. Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Use the result with context

Health results are educational estimates, not a diagnosis or treatment recommendation. A qualified clinician can interpret measurements in the context of your health.

Formula and method

An 80 cm waist and 160 cm height give a ratio of 0.5.

Ratio = waist circumference / height, after length conversion.

Worked example

Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.

Waist circumference
80 cm
Height
160 cm
Your waist to height ratio
0.5

Assumptions and limitations

  • Measure waist midway between the lower ribs and upper hips after breathing out normally. NICE uses this measure alongside BMI in adults with BMI below 35 kg/m². Adult central-adiposity categories are 0.4–0.49 healthy, 0.5–0.59 increased and at least 0.6 high; it is not a diagnosis. Children require age-appropriate guidance.
  • Local arithmetic preserves captured unit controls and supported inverses. Clear the unknown field and enter sufficient independent measurements; a zero denominator cannot identify a unique inverse.
