How to use this calculator
- Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
- Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
- Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.
Use the result with context
Results are estimates for planning and education. Confirm rates, taxes, fees, and legal requirements with the relevant institution or a qualified professional before making a financial decision.
Formula and method
Using reported annual CPI-U indexes, $100 in 2024 corresponds to about $102.63 in 2025 for the U.S. urban-consumer all-items basket.
Target-year USD = reference-year USD × CPI(target year) / CPI(reference year).
Worked example
Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.
- Amount in reference-year dollars
- 100 USD
- Reference year (annual CPI-U)
- 2024
- Equivalent amount in target-year dollars
- 102.63 USD
Assumptions and limitations
- The historical series is CPI-U, U.S. city average, all items, not seasonally adjusted, with 1982–84 = 100. It represents the national urban-consumer basket rather than your individual spending or a particular product.
- Both year selectors retain every year from 1913 through 2025. The snapshot uses BLS published annual indexes verified on October 12, 2026 (Toronto time). It contains no 2026 annual estimate, forecast or live data connection.
- Use the reported annual index rather than a single month. The captured 2025 value was a February monthly reading; this tool uses the reported annual 321.943. The 2024 index is 313.689 and the 2007 index is 207.342.
- Annual figures follow BLS reporting conventions. October 2025 has no published monthly observation in the BLS historical table; do not assume every reported annual index is an average of twelve published monthly readings. Averaging rounded early monthly data can also differ from published annual indexes.
- Dollar amounts must be nonnegative. Select both years, then enter either dollar amount and clear the other to solve backwards. Zero dollars converts to zero dollars.
- Years are discrete selections kept fixed by default. Money ratios do not uniquely determine a calendar year: some years share an index, and a computed index may fall between listed values. Choose the years explicitly.
- This compares consumer purchasing power, not interest, an investment return, a foreign-exchange rate, salary adequacy or an automatic adjustment clause. Both amounts are US dollars.
Common questions
Does this use the latest monthly inflation rate?
It uses a dated table of reported annual CPI-U indexes through 2025, rather than the latest month or a forecast.
Can I calculate the earlier dollar amount?
Yes. Select both years, clear the reference-year amount and enter its target-year equivalent. The inverse divides by the same CPI ratio.
Is this my personal cost-of-living change?
The index tracks the average urban-consumer all-items basket. Your locations, purchases and spending weights can produce a different change.

Use independently checked BLS annual CPI-U data for every retained year; correct the 2007, 2024 and 2025 captured values and require nonnegative dollar equivalents. Guard all four dividing variants with positive index or dollar denominators; zero money remains valid while it cannot identify a unique year.
