Formula and method
One minute of 44.1 kHz, 16-bit stereo PCM contains 10.584 MB of audio data at 1,411.2 kilobits per second, before headers and metadata.
Bitrate = samples per second × bits per sample × channels; data size = bitrate × duration
Worked example
Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.
- Audio length
- 1:0 min / sec
- PCM bitrate
- 1411.2 kbit /s
- Raw audio payload size
- 10.584 MB
Assumptions and limitations
- The calculation is for uncompressed PCM samples, excluding container headers, metadata, padding, compression and encoding overhead.
- A sample is counted for each channel. Stereo has two channels; channel-layout names do not determine compression or codec behavior.
- MB is decimal megabytes. One byte contains eight bits. Use the unit selectors to distinguish binary capacity units where offered.
- The listed bit depths and sample rates are arithmetic choices, not a guarantee that a device or file format supports that combination.
Common questions
Does this predict an MP3 file size?
No. Compressed codecs use different bitrate rules. This calculator multiplies the uncompressed sample count by the bits stored per sample.
