Tempo, Measures and Score Duration

Tempo is beats per minute in the beat unit shown for the selected meter. Simple meters count numerator beats; compound 6/8, 9/8 and 12/8 count two, three and four dotted-quarter beats.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
  2. Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
  3. Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Formula and method

Worked example: duration = 32; stafftime = 64. See the assumptions for units and model limits.

duration = beats_per_measure * number_of_measures / tempo * 60; stafftime = num_staffs * duration

Assumptions and limitations

  • Tempo is beats per minute in the beat unit shown for the selected meter. Simple meters count numerator beats; compound 6/8, 9/8 and 12/8 count two, three and four dotted-quarter beats.
  • Score duration equals beats per measure times measure count divided by tempo, multiplied by 60 seconds. Staff time is aggregate duration across staff count, not extra elapsed performance time. Custom meter preserves an editable beat count.

Common questions

What does this model assume?

Tempo is beats per minute in the beat unit shown for the selected meter. Simple meters count numerator beats; compound 6/8, 9/8 and 12/8 count two, three and four dotted-quarter beats.

Can I solve for a different value?

Clear the desired editable unknown and enter sufficient independent known values. Unit selectors preserve quantities; singular or unsupported inverse branches remain incomplete.
