Formula and method

Under the five-keystroke word convention, 60 words per minute equals 300 keystrokes per minute and 18,000 keystrokes per hour. These are rate conversions, not a measurement of accuracy.

Keystrokes per minute = words per minute × 5; keystrokes per hour = keystrokes per minute × 60

Worked example

Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.

Keystroke per hour

Assumptions and limitations

  • A standard word is five keystrokes, including characters counted by your typing test. The extended day-based unit options use a sixteen-hour active day; use minute or hour units for ordinary timed tests.
  • Use the units shown beside each field. This model assumes the stated relationship and does not account for quantities left out of the formula.
