Formula and method
If 600 qualifying current-year citations refer to 100 and 200 citable items in the two prior years, the ratio is 600 / 300 = 2.
Citation ratio = qualifying current-year citations / (prior-year citable items + preceding-year citable items)
Worked example
Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.
- Current-year citations to the two prior years
- 600
- Citable items in the prior year
- 100
- Citable items in the preceding year
- 200
- Two-year citations-per-item ratio
- 2
Assumptions and limitations
- Use one reporting year and the same journal and citation-data source throughout. Count citations in that year to the specified two prior publication years.
- The denominator is the source-defined set of citable items, not necessarily every published item. Matching a reporting service requires its document classifications and coverage.
- Counts are nonnegative whole numbers, and the combined publication count must be positive. No qualifying citations gives a ratio of zero.
- This is arithmetic from user-supplied counts. It does not retrieve, certify or reproduce an official Journal Citation Reports value, rank journals or assess an individual article.
Common questions
Does this retrieve an official Journal Impact Factor?
No. You supply the counts. Official reported metrics depend on the provider’s indexing, classifications, citation matching and reporting rules.
Can one publication year contain zero items?
Yes, provided the combined count across both years is positive. A zero denominator does not define a citations-per-item ratio.
References
Bookify allows zero citations and a zero citation ratio while retaining whole counts and a positive combined publication denominator.
