Formula and method

Quarter scores of 80% and 90%, each weighted 40%, plus a 70% final exam weighted 20%, give an 82% semester grade.

Semester grade = (quarter 1 Γ— weight 1 + quarter 2 Γ— weight 2 + final exam Γ— final weight) / 100

Assumptions and limitations

  • All grades and weights use the 0–100 percentage scale. Enter 80 for 80%, and 40 for a 40% weight.
  • The three weights must total exactly 100%. The calculator can derive a missing weight from the retained 100% total; when entering all three, their sum must be 100%.
  • This models two quarter grades and a final exam. It does not add assignments, extra credit, dropped assessments, attendance rules, grade curves or letter-grade boundaries.
  • A requested inverse score outside 0–100 is rejected. If an assessment has zero weight, changing its score cannot affect the semester grade.

Common questions

Can I find the final exam score needed for a target?

Yes. Supply the quarter scores, all weights and the target semester score, leaving the final score unknown. A target requiring a score outside 0–100 is outside this model.

What does the pie chart show?

It shows assessment weights, not the points earned. A 20% exam weight occupies one fifth of the chart regardless of the exam score.
