Formula and method

Long-term debt of 300 plus short-term debt of 100 gives total debt of 400. Against total assets of 1,000, the debt-to-assets share is 40%.

Total debt = short-term + long-term debt; debt share (%) = total debt ÷ assets × 100

Assumptions and limitations

  • Choose a consistent definition. An interest-bearing debt measure differs from a total-liabilities measure. Keep short- and long-term components mutually exclusive and use the same balance-sheet date.
  • Use consistent periods, currency and accounting definitions. The result follows the stated formula and the figures you supply.
