Formula and method
A 2 m by 2 m area with a 4 mm effective layer uses 0.016 m³. At the entered wet density 2000 kg/m³ and 50% dry fraction, this models 16 kg of dry material: one 20 kg bag costing 10, with no waste.
Volume = area × effective thickness; wet mass = volume × density × (1+waste); dry mass = wet mass × dry fraction; bags = ceil(dry mass/bag mass).

Assumptions and limitations
- This is an ideal effective layer estimate. Preset effective thicknesses are approximate planning assumptions; tile size alone cannot establish installation thickness, trowel selection or manufacturer coverage. Use measured effective thickness and the product yield.
- The default wet density and dry fraction are adjustable assumptions, not manufacturer specifications. Added waste is a percentage of net quantity.
- Clear an unknown before solving backward. Currency controls represent the chosen denomination without exchange rates; prices must use the selected denominator units.
- Whole package, board, roll or truss ceilings use exact decimal arithmetic. An amount just above a whole-number boundary needs the next whole unit; numeric display rounding does not lower the purchase count.

Enforce the documented geometric domains and positive whole counts. Use exact decimal ceilings for whole material quantities; the captured mathjs ceiling snaps sufficiently near integers and can undercount immediately above a boundary. Bookify uses exact customary mass and volume definitions for density units, replacing rounded factors in the reference.
