How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
  2. Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
  3. Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Formula and method

Two metric tablespoons contain 30 mL. Two US customary tablespoons contain 29.5735295625 mL; the conventions are different.

Metric tbsp × 15 = mL; US tbsp × 14.78676478125 = mL

Worked example

Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.

Tablespoons in the selected convention
2 metric tbsp
Volume in milliliters
30 ml
Equivalent cooking volume
0.1268 US cup

Assumptions and limitations

  • Select metric or US customary tablespoons explicitly. The initial choice can follow your locale; an Australian 20 mL tablespoon is not one of these two options.
  • The 250 mL cup is a metric convention, not a half-imperial-pint conversion. US customary cups contain exactly 236.5882365 mL.
  • The pinch and glass are fixed illustrative amounts of 0.3125 mL and 200 mL. Real utensils and hand-measured pinches are not standardized by this calculator.
  • This is volume conversion only. Converting an ingredient to grams requires its density and, for packed ingredients, an appropriate measurement method. Signed values can represent a volume difference.

Common questions

Why does a US tablespoon differ from 15 mL?

The US customary tablespoon is one 256th of a US liquid gallon, or exactly 14.78676478125 mL.

Can I use the result for grams of flour?

Volume and mass are different quantities. Flour density also changes with packing, so use a suitable ingredient-specific mass measurement or density.

References

US customary tablespoons use exactly one 256th of a US liquid gallon. US customary teaspoons use exactly one 768th of a US liquid gallon. US customary cups use exactly one sixteenth of a US liquid gallon. US fluid ounces use the exact gallon definition expressed in milliliters.
