Formula and method
A 3 m wire carrying 2 A perpendicular to a 0.5 T field experiences 3 N of force.
F = I L B sin θ
Worked example
Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.
- Magnetic field (B)
- .5 T
- Current (I)
- 2 A
- Length (l)
- 3 m
- Angle (α)
- 90 deg
- Force (F)
- 3 N
Assumptions and limitations
- Current, field and force are magnitudes; length is the straight segment inside the uniform field. Included angle ranges from 0° to 180°.
- Parallel and antiparallel alignment produce zero force. The vector direction follows the cross product I L × B.
- An inverse angle from sine returns a principal solution; θ and 180° − θ have the same force magnitude.
- Zero current or field gives zero force and makes some inverse problems nonunique. This model excludes field gradients and curved-wire integration.
Common questions
What should I check before using this result?
Current, field and force are magnitudes; length is the straight segment inside the uniform field. Included angle ranges from 0° to 180°.
References
Bookify accepts zero field, current and force magnitudes and restricts the included angle to 0° through 180°.
