Formula and method

A signal traveling 299,792.458 meters at 299,792,458 m/s takes one millisecond. Its velocity factor is one.

Propagation time = path length / speed; velocity factor = speed / 299,792,458 m/s

Worked example

Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.

One-way signal path length
299792.458 m
Signal propagation speed
299792458 m/s
Velocity factor
1
One-way propagation delay
1 ms

Assumptions and limitations

  • This is propagation time only. Packet transmission, queuing, processing, serialization, equipment delay and return travel are excluded.
  • Material choices retain the captured approximate speed presets. Use measured cable specifications in custom mode when a more accurate value is available.
  • The air preset uses the exact vacuum speed of light as an approximation. The model requires positive distance and speed no greater than 299,792,458 m/s.
  • A straight-line geographic distance may differ from the physical routed path. Round-trip propagation doubles the result only when both directions use equal path lengths and speeds.

Common questions

Is this the same as network ping?

No. Ping measures a round trip that can include several other delay components. This result covers one-way propagation alone.
