Formula and method

5,400 seconds equals 90 minutes or 1.5 hours. Its hours/minutes/seconds representation is 1:30:0.

Minutes = seconds ÷ 60; hours = seconds ÷ 3,600

Assumptions and limitations

  • A year means exactly 365.25 days (31,557,600 seconds) in this model. A month is one twelfth of that year: 30.4375 days or 2,629,800 seconds. These fixed durations do not count actual calendar months or anniversaries.
  • A day is 24 hours, an hour is 60 minutes and a minute is 60 seconds. This arithmetic does not account for daylight-saving transitions, leap seconds or a named time zone.
  • Compound time fields use colons between the displayed components. For example, 1:30:0 in hours/minutes/seconds is 1.5 hours, not 1.30 decimal hours. Use the selected unit to interpret the components.
  • This model accepts positive durations. Nanosecond, microsecond and millisecond options are decimal subdivisions of a second; measurement precision is limited by the input.

Common questions

How many milliseconds are in a second?

One second is exactly 1,000 milliseconds, one million microseconds or one billion nanoseconds.

Is the result a timestamp?

No. A timestamp identifies an instant relative to an epoch. This result is a duration and contains no date or time-zone information.
