How to use this calculator
- Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
- Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
- Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.
Use the result with context
Health results are educational estimates, not a diagnosis or treatment recommendation. A qualified clinician can interpret measurements in the context of your health.
Formula and method
Reticulocytes 3%, patient hematocrit 30% and reference hematocrit 45% give a corrected reticulocyte percentage of 2%.
Corrected reticulocytes (%) = measured reticulocytes (%) × patient Hct (%) / reference Hct (%).
Worked example
Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.
- Patient hematocrit
- 30 %
- Measured reticulocyte percentage
- 3 %
- Corrected reticulocyte percentage
- 2 %
Assumptions and limitations
- Enter patient hematocrit, reference hematocrit and measured reticulocytes as ordinary percent numbers: enter 30 for 30%, not 0.30. Patient and reference hematocrit must be positive and at most 100%; measured reticulocytes range from 0% to 100%.
- The retained starting reference hematocrit is 45%, and it is editable. Select a reference appropriate to the clinical context rather than treating this default as universal.
- The output is a corrected percentage/index. It is not an absolute reticulocyte density in cells/μL; that calculation requires a red-cell count, which this tool does not take.
- A reticulocyte production index additionally divides the corrected percentage by a maturation factor. This tool performs only the hematocrit correction.
- Zero measured reticulocytes gives zero corrected percentage. Zero pairs do not uniquely recover hematocrit; singular inverse results remain blank.
- The corrected index is not the original cell fraction and is not clipped to 100%. This arithmetic alone does not diagnose anemia, evaluate marrow function or determine treatment.
Common questions
Is this result an absolute reticulocyte count?
It is a corrected reticulocyte percentage. An absolute count per volume requires the red-cell density and a different calculation.
Is this the complete reticulocyte production index?
A complete RPI also uses a maturation correction. This tool stops after correcting for the patient-to-reference hematocrit ratio.

Label the captured ratio as corrected reticulocyte percentage rather than cell density, accept zero measured/corrected reticulocyte percentages, and bound the input percentages by 100. Guard all four dividing variants to preserve known measurements without inventing hematocrit from zero pairs.
