Formula and method
A rectangular pool 10 meters long and 4 meters wide, with end depths of 1 and 2 meters, has a modeled volume of 60,000 liters. At 2 per cubic meter, filling it costs 120.
Average depth = (depth 1 + depth 2) ÷ 2; volume = plan area × average depth

Assumptions and limitations
- It assumes the entered depths represent a linear depth change across a rectangular or elliptical footprint. Steps, benches, curved walls, irregular bottoms and the actual waterline can change capacity.
- Use consistent units and project-specific dimensions, density and prices. This geometric estimate does not add quantities that are absent from the formula.
Common questions
When is the average-depth method appropriate?
It assumes the entered depths represent a linear depth change across a rectangular or elliptical footprint. Steps, benches, curved walls, irregular bottoms and the actual waterline can change capacity.
