Formula and method
A rectangle 12 ft long and 8 ft wide covers 96 ft². Enter the dimensions in their selected units; the result stays in square feet.
Area in ft² = length in ft × width in ft
Worked example
Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.
- Rectangle length
- 12 ft
- Rectangle width
- 8 ft
- Area in square feet
- 96 ft²
Assumptions and limitations
- The shape is a flat rectangle with positive length and width. The output is area, not perimeter or volume.
- The area field remains in square feet. Each dimension has its own selector, including compound feet-and-inches entry.
- An international foot is exactly 0.3048 m. No allowance for waste, openings, overlap or slope is included.
- Enter area and one dimension to solve for the other positive dimension.
Common questions
Can I enter dimensions measured in meters?
Yes. Select meters for the relevant dimension fields. The area is converted to square feet automatically.
Can I use this to estimate material purchases?
It provides geometric area only. Material coverage, cuts, waste and package sizes need to be handled separately.
